ON Semiconductor sells two wafer fabs

It is understood that Los Angeles Semiconductor is a subsidiary of Linear ASICs Inc. and mainly operates 180mm wafer fabs for analog, mixed-signal and power products.

According to foreign media sources, a Japanese fund backed by the Development Bank of Japan and Itochu Corporation is acquiring a semiconductor plant owned by U.S. manufacturer ON Semiconductor (onsemi) for more than 20 billion yen (about 983 million yuan).The factory in Niigata will be equipped with the latest production facilities and will start OEM production of semiconductors for electric vehicles (EVs) in December, according to reports.

According to ON's website, it has two wafer fabrication plants in Niigata, Japan, which were acquired by ON in 2011 from Sanyo Electric Group and are mainly used for 5-inch and 6-inch wafer fabrication. It is reported that the plant has passed the automotive quality certification and meets the requirements of IATF 16949 (global quality control industry standards). Currently, ON Semiconductor manufactures BCD, BiCMOS, CMOS and semiconductor discrete devices primarily at the Niigata facility.

Back in August 2020, ON Semiconductor announced that it was considering selling its Niigata plant in Ohtani, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The company said the sale of the Niigata plant was part of its restructuring plan to optimize its manufacturing base and focus more on highly differentiated power supply-related electronic components and sensor products. Earlier, ON Semiconductor had already sold its fabs in South Portland, Maine, and in Oudenaarde, Belgium.

In addition, ON Semiconductor recently announced its third quarter 2022 results. According to the results, the company's third-quarter revenue reached a record $2.193 billion, beating market expectations and growing 26 percent year-over-year; net income attributable to the company was $311.9 million.
